Headaches – A pain in the neck?

An article in Canadian Family physician, a peer reviewed journal estimated that at least 70% of headaches arise from the cervical spine (neck) and related structures.
Your neck may do more than you thought. In addition to holding our head up it:

  • Houses the arteries and veins that transport blood to and from our brain
  • Allow for the tremendous range of motion of our head
  • Houses and protects the spinal cord and spinal nerves

When we sustain an injury, the upper neck may sustain the largest injury as it supports our relatively heavy head (12 pounds on average!). This can stress these other important structures in the neck.

Is your head on straight? Literally.

When headaches are present, there may be a breakdown in posture which put stress on sensitive structures in the neck.

This may be seen as forward head posture, a head tilt, unlevel hips or shoulders, or even one leg that appears shorter than the other. These are all signs that we may be able to help with your headaches!
